Academic Concerns Therapy with Christine Dassow, LMHC, NCC, ADHD-CCSP– Available Online for Florida Residents (including college students who aren’t permanent)
Does This Sound Familiar?
You have a huge project to complete but delay getting started. Maybe it’s fear of making mistakes, fear of not being able to do the work, or something else blocking you. But, procrastination rears its ugly head once more, something you’re very used to and wish you didn’t do all the time.

Or maybe you have trouble scheduling your million responsibilities as a young adult, all new to you and especially every new semester in college. Time management has always been difficult for you and nothing seems to work on your own so you miss obligations such as class or are usually late for social events and people get angry with you. You can’t fit everything in but there must be a way!

Then there’s the question of what you even want to major in at school because you can’t decide on a career path. Maybe it’s the anxiety of making a decision that stops you from progressing but could just be the need to explore all the details cluttering your thoughts and making you feel stuck. Well, you aren’t alone in any of these scenarios an a clear decision about your future can be made.

So, What are Common Academic Concerns?
Everyone struggles with aspects of school at times, but some of us keep falling into traps and old patterns, or never learned healthy academic strategies from the start.
Here are some common problem areas regarding school:
- Procrastination on assignments
- Low motivation
- Test anxiety (and general anxiety for self-confidence, decision-making, and more)
- Poor study habits
- Poor time management (when to study, how far ahead to start studying, how to make realistic daily goals, how to fit studying in your busy schedule)
- Difficulty scheduling responsibilities (school, social, work, family…ahhh!)
- Low or sporadic class attendance
- Uncertainty for a college major and career (Does family have a large influence on your decision? Does fear of success get in the way?)
You may need some guidance on how to build your plan for achievement so guess what! I can help you get started.

What Academic Concerns Therapy May Look Like For You
You need strategies to get you to your goals and I can help you brainstorm what you want (where do you see yourself when you imagine triumph?), decide what’s needed along the way (sometimes we don’t even know where to start), and to make a solid plan for you to meet your life goals. You’ll have all the tools to be the student you always wanted to be, the student I know you are.

I’ve spent 24 years working in the school system, from elementary school to the university level, with 10 years of my career at a college counseling center. I know the struggles you face as a young adult in a huge and complicated academic system, so let me help you navigate those scary and frustrating waters to get to your calm and controlled place on the sand.
Here’s some examples of how we can master your life in the academic area
- Behavioral strategies (digging into what motivates you, what rewards you may respond to, pairing behaviors, time management, scheduling for success)
- Anxiety and self-esteem exploration (sometimes academic concerns are based in these issues, including test anxiety, class attendance if socially anxious—we can work on relaxation coping skills—, or lack of self-confidence and worth)
- Exploration of study skills behavior (sometimes it takes re-learning how to study so we can speak about your unique methods and how they can be improved, even if you need testing for more in-depth answers, such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Learning Disorders (LD)).
- Career guidance (how to learn more about your abilities, values, and interests, gathering information on majors and careers, decision-making for your future)
