Adjustment and Life Transitions Therapy with Christine Dassow, LMHC, NCC, ADHD-CCSP– Available Online for Florida Residents (including college students who aren’t permanent)
Does This Sound Familiar?
You’ve been accepted to college but now it’s time to actually move away from home, away from all that you’ve known, to be on your own. Your stomach hurts even thinking about it. Then, once you’re at college, you feel so homesick you can’t study and don’t want to leave your room. You’re at the beginning of a huge life transition and the adjustment is tougher than anticipated.

Or maybe your years in college are ending and you had the time of your life, but now you’re graduating and don’t know where to go next—move home? Start your career in a new location? Stay in the college area where you’re familiar with everything?

Changes occur at any stage of life, but as a young adult, you may face some that lead to adjustment difficulties. We all experience a rough time transitioning to a situation in life at some point, but you don’t have to do it alone.
What are Some Common Adjustments and Life Transitions?
There’s many circumstances in our lifespan that cause mental, emotional, and physical stress, and we all experience them at different levels and at different times.
Here’s some common life transition areas that cause distress:
- Moving to college
- Graduating from college
- Starting a new job or job change
- Career change
- Relationship changes (beginning a relationship, breaking up, long-distance dating, marriage, divorce)
- Moving
These changes can be expected or unplanned, exciting but also scary. So, how do you make the transition into what’s staring you in the face? Let me tell you how therapy can help!

How Adjustment and Life Transitions Therapy Can Help
Adjusting to a major life change takes time, but also sometimes takes learning new strategies and growing in awareness about yourself. Over my 24 year career, I’ve helped many young adults in their transitions. Some methods used in our online therapy may include:
- Learning how to recognize and release expectations for your new or upcoming life change (adjusting expectations to be realistic, gaining flexibility with change, non-judgmental mindfulness techniques)
- Reframing unhealthy thoughts (challenging negative self-talk)
- Increasing coping skills (gaining a sense of control, establishing a routine, reaching out to support people, solidifying social skills for new support areas [people, organizations, community events], bringing back past outlets for healing/past interests/getting in touch with your old self and blending with your new self through action, imagery, and more)
- Exploring stress management and improving your methods of a sense of stability (making routines, creating a plan of action, expression of emotion through artistic, physical, or other means)
How you imagine relief may seem far away for you right now, but it’s achievable with a little assistance in a safe, private therapeutic space. What can you do to reach your goal, you ask? Well, keep reading.
