Self-Esteem Therapy with Christine Dassow, LMHC, NCC, ADHD-CCSP– Available Online for Florida Residents (including college students who aren’t permanent)
Does This Sound Familiar?
You don’t think you’re as talented as others with a hobby or skill, don’t feel as smart as others in school, or struggle socially making new friends. Maybe you try to blend in with your environment, afraid to stand out and be criticized, even more than you criticize yourself.

You think, “Why don’t I have the confidence that other people have, easily able to talk to strangers, make eye contact with friends, and feel good about myself more than in a fleeting moment?” Or, “I’ll never be as smart [cool, happy…] as them.”

You may feel “less than” all the time, even when people compliment you on a job well done. And you doubt your skills and any accomplishments, saying “Oh, it was luck” and thinking “They must be mistaken.”
Well, you can feel worthy, you can gain confidence to stand out in whatever way you wish, and you don’t have to feel like an imposter anymore. You can start opening your shell and facing the world how you want, but may just need a little help building your self-esteem.

What is Self-Esteem?
Self-esteem is about having confidence in yourself and feeling satisfied as well. It can encompass many facets but here’s some examples of low self-esteem:
- Lack of confidence (including blaming yourself when something goes wrong that’s outside of your control, difficulty asking for help, not accepting compliments, avoiding events for fear of failing)
- Comparing yourself to others (thinking they are better than you, trying to be perfect or “have it all” like it seems others have on social media)
- Imposter syndrome (feeling like a sham and ignoring your achievements)
- Negative self-talk (thinking and saying negative statements about yourself and your worth, even joking around about it when you really mean it)
- External locus of control (depending on others for your worth, your day can be ruined from someone’s negative opinion of you)
- Weak boundaries (doing things you don’t want to do and feeling uncomfortable, being a people-pleaser)
You Can Feel Better About Yourself
There is hope for you to change your experiences in the world, to make friends, to feel at peace with yourself, or to know your accomplishments are valuable. I want you to be you and to have the confidence to shine when you want. Wouldn’t it be amazing to just be yourself and feel calm?

So, how can you learn to change your thinking, feeling, and/or behaviors and feel empowered, self-confident, and advocate for yourself for the rest of your life? Let’s work together to achieve the life that awaits you.
How Self-Esteem Building in Therapy May Look for You
I’ve worked with young adults for many years on improving their self-esteem and use a variety of ways to help people change their view of themselves. It always depends on where you’re starting and where you want to go as well as what works for you, not just anyone. You are unique in your needs and I love to figure out with you what helps you reach your goals!
Here’s some examples of how I can work with you in our online therapy:
- Thought awareness and thought challenging (find out what types of unhealthy thinking patterns you find yourself trapped in and how to argue against that thinking so you can feel better about yourself and behave in a new and healthy way; learn warning signs for your thinking and decrease perfectionism)
- Mindfulness (increase a non-judgmental mentality of yourself and of the moment, learn how to observe and not be as affected by others due to a strong internal sense of self)
- Creative strategies (quiet your inner critic/voice who fills your head with false statements by using imagery, art, or music)
- Re-write your story (narrate a new story you can repeat to yourself so you envision the life you want, gain a sense of control/an internal locus of control)
- Learn new social skills (you can make new friends, invite people to hang out, and ask for help in class; you also can learn open and positive body language to increase your social confidence and outcomes)
And there’s so much more we can do to make you feel like the beautiful star you are, the one I know is already present.
